Game of Life · lifegameproject.com · last updated 13 October 2026
Game of Life is a small, ad-free Conway's Game of Life game. We try to collect as little as possible. This policy explains what the app stores and what (if anything) leaves your device.
What stays on your device
- Your language choice, saved patterns/blueprints, lesson progress, and game settings are stored locally in your browser (
localStorage). They never leave your device and we cannot see them.
- The app works fully offline.
What you choose to submit
- Leaderboard: if you submit a challenge score, the display name you type and your score are sent to and stored on our leaderboard so they can be shown publicly. Please don't use your real name if you'd rather stay anonymous — any nickname works.
- Community gallery: if you share a pattern, that pattern and the name you attach to it are stored and shown publicly in the gallery.
Submitting to the leaderboard or gallery is always optional — the game is fully playable without it.
What we do NOT collect
- No accounts, no sign-in, no passwords.
- No advertising, no third-party ad/tracking SDKs, no location, no contacts.
- No analytics that identify you personally.
iPhone and iPad apps
The native apps Manilha, Game Life, Qi and Plank Constant have no accounts, leaderboards, galleries, analytics or advertising. Your language choice, game settings and bests are stored only on your device and are deleted when you delete the app. Game Life, Qi and Plank Constant send nothing to us. Manilha sends nothing either unless you play online with friends; the next section explains exactly what that involves. Plank Constant uses the camera; the section after it explains how.
Manilha: online rooms
You can play Manilha with up to three friends in an online room, from the Manilha app on iPhone or iPad or in a browser at lifegameproject.com/game/truco.html. Solo and same-device games never go online.
- What is sent: when you create or join a room, your device connects to our room server (the "relay", which runs on Cloudflare) and sends the room code; a random player number your device makes up for that room, which is not linked to you, your device or any account; the animal avatar and seat you pick; and your moves (how many tricks you guess and which cards you play). The player who hosts the table also sends the state of the game: everyone's cards and scores.
- What is not sent: no name, account, email, chat, contacts, location or advertising identifier. Nobody types anything that other players see: everyone appears as an animal and a seat number.
- Who can see it: everyone in the room receives the room's data so their device can show the game. That includes the other players' cards, which their apps and the web page keep hidden but a technically minded player could read, so rooms are meant for people you trust.
- How long it is kept: the relay keeps a room's data only while the room is in use, and deletes it automatically six hours after the last move. It keeps no logs, and we don't copy, analyse or share the data or use it for anything but running your game.
- Cloudflare: like any web host, Cloudflare handles the connection (and so sees your IP address to deliver the data) under its own privacy policy. We don't receive or store IP addresses.
Plank Constant: camera and face data
Plank Constant uses the front TrueDepth camera, through Apple's ARKit, to follow your face so you can play hands-free while you hold a plank.
- What it reads: while you set up and play, ARKit tracks your face and gives the app a few measurements: where your face is in the picture, how far it is from the phone, which way your head is tilted or turned, and how raised your eyebrows are. The app uses them only to steer, strike and block, and to tell you when you are too close or too far.
- Pixel selfie: the app makes a tiny 20 × 20-pixel picture of your face to use as your character's head. It is kept in memory for the current round only and is never saved.
- Nothing is stored or sent to us: no photos, video, face measurements or face maps are saved on your device or uploaded. Face data is never used for advertising or marketing, never used to identify you, and never sold or shared with anyone.
- Duels with a friend over FaceTime (SharePlay): if you start a duel with a friend over SharePlay, your phone sends theirs your moves (strike, block or rest), whether your face is in view, and your 20 × 20-pixel selfie, so it can appear on your character. This goes between your two phones through Apple's SharePlay service; we never receive it, and your friend's phone does not save it.
- Your choice: you can play with touch instead of the camera, and you can turn camera access off at any time in Settings → Plank Constant.
Children
The app is suitable for all ages and does not knowingly collect personal information from children. Because the only data you can submit is an optional display name and score, we ask that children use a nickname rather than a real name.
Removing your data
Local data: clear your browser storage / app data, or use the in-app Clear options. Leaderboard or gallery entries: email us at the address below and we'll remove them.
